Fuel products · Clear diesel
Clear diesel, delivered on your schedule.
Ultra-low sulfur diesel for everything that drives on a public road — tractor units, box trucks, service vehicles, any road-registered equipment. Brought to where they park.
- Grade
- Ultra-low sulfur (ULSD)
- Use
- On-highway, road-registered
- Also available
- Dyed · Renewable · Gasoline · DEF
What it is
Clear diesel is the taxed one.
Clear and dyed diesel are chemically the same fuel. Clear diesel carries on-highway fuel tax and is legal in any vehicle. Dyed diesel does not, and is restricted to equipment that never touches a public road.
Ultra-low sulfur is the grade: sulfur content capped low enough that modern emissions systems — particulate filters, selective catalytic reduction, the DEF system — work as designed. Anything newer than about 2007 requires it, and running the wrong fuel damages the aftertreatment rather than simply running badly.
For most fleets the practical question is not which fuel but how it arrives. A truck that starts its shift full has not queued, detoured or filled in a card record.
What it fuels
Typical clear diesel equipment.
- Tractor units & trailers
- Box trucks & vans
- Service & utility vehicles
- Refuse and municipal fleets
- Road-registered plant
- Coaches & shuttles
How it reaches you
Three ways the fuel arrives.
Fleet fueling
The tanker comes to the yard, usually overnight, and fills the vehicles where they stand.
Into your own tank
High-volume drops into on-site storage, scheduled against how fast you actually burn it.
Emergency delivery
When a tank is lower than anyone thought or the weather has taken the schedule apart.
Common questions
Before you call.
What is the difference between clear and dyed diesel?
Tax, and where you are allowed to burn it. They are the same fuel chemically. Clear diesel carries on-highway fuel tax and can be used anywhere; dyed diesel is untaxed, dyed red so it can be identified, and restricted to off-road equipment. Running dyed fuel in a road vehicle is a violation, and the dye is detectable long after the fuel is gone.
Is ULSD the same as clear diesel?
Effectively yes, in the United States. Ultra-low sulfur diesel describes the grade and it is the standard for on-highway fuel. When people say clear diesel they mean taxed, on-road ULSD.
Does clear diesel go bad in storage?
It degrades slowly, and water and microbial growth do more damage than age. Tanks that turn over regularly are rarely a problem; tanks holding standby fuel for months need a plan. Ask us and we will tell you honestly whether yours is worth worrying about.
Can we take clear and dyed diesel on the same delivery?
Yes. Sites running both are normal, and both come off the same schedule. They need separate storage, and we will work that out with you.
Do we need DEF as well?
If your vehicles are newer than roughly 2010 and use selective catalytic reduction, yes — and running out of DEF derates the engine whether or not the fuel tank is full. It is worth putting on the same delivery schedule.
